  KERALA PILGRIM CENTRES  


Kerala, the visitors' paradise, has soul-cleansing Centers too. Pilgrim Centers of all religions abound this tiny state. Thousands throng such Centers with agitated minds and return cool, calm and collected.

Hindus, Christians, Muslims and even minorities such as Jains have their own pilgrim Centers where devotees genuflect to bare their mental trauma.

Major Hindu Pilgrim Centers

   

Attukal Bhagavathi Temple:
Attukal Bhagavathy temple (Mudippura), knows as the Sabarimala of women, is in Thiruvananthapuram. Attukal Ponkala, the annual festival commences on Bharani day in Kumbhom (February - March) and continues for nine days.

 

Chettikulangara Devi Temple:
One of the renowned Devi temples in Kerala is Chettikulangara temple, Kayamkulam in Alappuzha. Highlights of Bharani festival, celebrated in February-March, are Kuthiyottam and Kettukazhcha. Of these , the former is performed as an offering to Bhagavathy

     

Guruvayoor Sree Krishna Temple:
A big pilgrim draw, Guruvayoor is known as Kasi of South. Round the year devotees throng to worship Guruvayoorappan, little Krishna, the reigning deity. Click for Dharshan Timings

 

Mannarsala Temple, Harippad:
Mannarasala temple at Harippad is the seat of God of Serpents. Built in a grove, the temple is reputed for having 30,000 images of snake-gods and this is the largest of its kind in the state.

     

Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Temple:
(15 km south of Alappuzha)Built in the typical Kerala architectural style, this temple is famous all over India for the Palpayasam, the daily offering of deliciously sweet milk porridge. It is also in this temple that Pallipana is performed by Velans (sorcerers) once every twelve years. Paintings of the Dasavatharam (the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu) are on display on the inner walls of the Chuttambalam. Ottanthullal, a satiric art form originated by the poet Kunchan Nambiar, was first performed on the premises of this temple.

 

Thrikkuratti Mahadeva Temple: >>
Located at Mannar,an an upcoming business town mid way between Mavelikara and Tiruvalla, in Alappuzha District of Kerala state, India, on State highway no. 6. It is situated on the banks of the Pamba River. It is one of the famous 108 Sivalayas built by Lord Parasurama. It is believed that the mammoth temple compound wall was built by a troup of Bhoothas of Lord Paramasiva in one night. The unique festivities of Thrikkuratti temple (Sahasra kalasam, Maikatti puja and Sivarathri Nritham) attracts lot of pilgrims.

     

Achankovil Lord Ayyappa Temple:
One of the main temples of Lord Ayyappa, it is believed that the idol here is consecrated by Lord Parasurama himself. The temple is similar to the famous shrine at Sabarimala. The Manalar Falls and the Kumbuvurutty Falls, which also has a Nature Interaction Centre, are along the way to this temple.

 

Alathiyur Hanuman Temple, Malappuram:
(12 km from Tirur): One of the famous Hanuman Temples in Kerala and also dedicated to Sree Rama and Baratha. Special Pooja: Neyvedyam - Aval

     

Thrichambaram Sree Krishna Temple:
The temple dedicated to Sree Krishna is at Thrichambaram, Kannur, 14-kms from Pappinisserry railway station. The fortnight festival begins on 22nd Kumbham (February - March).

 

Ananthapura Lake Temple, Kasargod:
30 km from Bekal, this 9th century temple is the only lake temple in Kerala and is the moolasthanam (original abode) of Anandapadmanabha, the deity of Sree Padmanabha Swami Temple, Thiruvananthapuram. A crocodile at the temple pond, said to be 150 year old is a major attraction.

     
 

     

Major Muslim Pilgrim Centers

   

Cheraman Juma Masjid, Kodungallor:
The first mosque in India. Situated in Methala, Kodungalloor, hardly 20 kilometer from the Irinjalakuda railway station.Legend says King Cheraman Perumal of Kodungallor left for Mecca, embraced Islam, accepted the name Thajudee, married the sister of the then King of Jeddah.

 

Ottapalam Juma Masjid:
Mortal remains of Uthman Auliya, a revered man in Muslim Community here, is entombed here. Prayers are held in this mosque on Fridays. Annual festival is held in January-February.
